The new city of Salazar's regime. Architecture and urban design, the paradigm and the exceptions

Updated: Jul 24, 2018

Among the several urban projects undertaken by Salazar’s regime, the expansion of Lisbon towards the north was the most remarkable. The area corresponds to the districts of Areeiro and Alvalade, presently located some kilometres away from the city’s northern border, and recognized as highly attractive mixed-use areas.

The construction of the Areeiro and Alvalade districts dates back to the 1940s and 1950s, having their roots in the interventionist urban policies established by Salazar's minister Duarte Pacheco in the late 1930s.

Exploring this area of Lisbon, we get acquainted with the traditional architectural paradigm imposed by the regime’s propaganda as well as with exceptional pioneering modern projects which would later be explored in other parts of the city. The diversity of urban models and architectural solutions coexists, creating nonetheless a very coherent unity of extraordinary value.
