Contemporary architecture in Lisbon by ARX Portugal Arquitectos

Opposing the practice of façadism adopted worldwide, there is a new “building story” going on in Lisbon, which can be a landmark of the future.

A void in the urban front facing the Jardim de Santos, opened up the opportunity for a new construction there, and ARX Portugal – architects is the office in charge of the project.

Lisboa Architecture Walks & Trips joined a visit to the construction site, organized by @ccbgaragemsul (#buildingstories) with the chief architect Nuno Mateus.

The ongoing construction - Santos Design Building, is mainly intended for residential use but is far from being a traditional condominium: it will foster the neighbourhood’s mixed-use lifestyle integrating commercial units on the ground floor, and it will also provide a new pedestrian connection linking the Largo de Santos to the south with the Calçada Marquês de Abrantes and the Mouraria to the north.

The full integration of the new construction into the urban setting is one of the main premises of the project.

The whole structure in concrete has already been lifted, and the completion is scheduled for the spring of 2019.
