Pombaline Lisbon 1st November 1755-2017

The devastating earthquake that occurred precisely 262 years ago, was “the” turning point in the history of Lisbon. Marquês de Pombal was a visionary man with enough determination to turn a crisis into an opportunity! Putting aside the hypothesis to rebuild the city like it was, he decided to set up a new city. Pombaline Lisbon has been often referred as the first modern western city. The urban-architectonic plan was drawn up by the architects/engineers Carlos Mardel and Eugénio dos Santos, under the direction of Manuel da Maia (General and High-Engineer of the Kingdom). Pombaline Lisbon is currently part of Portugal’s tentative list of UNESCO http://whc.unesco.org/en/tentativelists/6226/
